ADVOCACY
- The
objective is to promote initiatives for change in public policy and
expanded resources that lead to greater self-determination among persons
who are blind or visually impaired.. Activities include sessions on a
variety of lively topics that range from legal affairs, entitlements,
assistive living to the arts. Workshops are lead by VISTAS and other
facilitators from grassroots organizations, public agencies as well as the
private sector. |

BRAILLE INSTRUCTION
- Objectives are to enable students to read and write Braille
efficiently and to use the Perkins Braillewriter and Slate Stylus
effectively. One-on-one instruction is preferred or two or more students
with like motivation, comprehension and communication skills. Grade One
consists of learning the twenty-six (26) letters of the alphabet, number
signs and general punctuation signs. Grade Two consists of learning over
two hundred (200) contractions, more punctuation signs and formats used in
Braille writing. |

COMPUTER INSTRUCTION
- Basic objectives are to meet the computing needs and objectives
of each student. Instruction is hands-on. Keyboard training utilizes keyboarding and
typing training software that speaks, displays lessons on screen and
includes drills, practice and typing games. Software Courses reflect three
levels of training : Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Each level
offers specific training according to the needs, competency and goals of
the student. Tape Instruction is divided into moderate and fast-track tape
instruction as an enhancement to the curriculum tasks. |

INDEPENDENT LIVING
-
The objective is
improve successful daily living for each individual. The curriculum
includes activities on bedroom comfort and safety, dressing and grooming,
eating and drinking, bath and toilet aids, food preparation and kitchen
navigation, writing, and recreation and exercise. |

JOB READINESS
-
The main
objective is to give individuals with disabilities an opportunity to
develop job-seeking and job-retention skills. Instruction includes job
readiness training, interview techniques, application process, role
playing, feedback and review. Students will gain knowledge and skills in
the application and interview process, accessing labor market information,
the development of lifelong skills in problem solving, motivation and
on-the-job behaviors. |

MICRO-ENTERPRISE
- This initiative is designed to promote e-commerce by incorporating
Internet technology into micro-enterprise development.
Activities include a review of the American Enterprise System, training on
software applications and the design of sound business plans, in-depth
study of successful e-commerce businesses and visits to selected sites. |

ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY - Objectives are to enable persons to travel safely and
independently in all familiar and unfamiliar areas. Training includes:
Pre-Cane Skills, Cane Instruction, Introduction to Residential Travel and
Mixed Business/Commercial Travel. Consumer training is complete when the
student is a safe and independent traveler in all familiar areas. Training
may be extended until all realistic goals are met. |
