Georgia's Project Independence for The Older Blind or Visually Impaired

VISTAS IS YOUR LOCAL PROVIDER

Serving Northeast Georgia

If you, a friend or a family member are 55 years of age or older and experiencing vision loss, or even if you have been blind or visually impaired all your life and think some new or up to date skills or products would enhance your independence, then this program may be for you.

Georgia's Project Independence for the older blind or visually impaired provides services throughout the state to senior adults experiencing vision loss. Rehabilitation specialists provide instruction in your home environment and in group settings. Peer support groups are available to discuss mutual problems and concerns of vision loss in a supportive setting. A low vision evaluation in designated clinics around Georgia will provide assessment and training to help you remain independent in your own home. Other services may include orientation and mobility training along with daily living skills training. Services are available to eligible seniors regardless of income and for little to no cost at all.

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in Project Independence, you must meet in the following criteria:

1) presence of a severe visual disability (including a combined vision and hearing loss),

2) age 55 and older

3) gainful employment difficult to achieve

4) independent living services appropriate and feasible.
